Join a market-leading British marine engineering specialist producing low-volume, high-value commercial vessels and specialised aluminium marine structures. Supported by fresh leadership and a substantial order book, they combine cutting-edge CAD design with on-site assembly to deliver build-ready vessels for commercial and defence clients worldwide.

Due to exciting growth within the business, they are expanding their design function and seeking a Manufacturing Design Engineer proficient in SolidWorks. In this role, you will bridge the gap between initial naval architecture concepts and practical workshop fabrication.

Responsibilities, but are not limited to

  • Deconstruct 3D surface models and 2D drawings into detailed, fabricator-ready aluminium structural components (frames, bulkheads, stringers, plates)

  • Produce clean, highly descriptive 2D fabrication assembly drawings and sub-assembly diagrams tailored for manual welding teams

  • Maintain an accurate 3D "Digital Twin" of the vessel, integrating exact vendor component dimensions to eliminate physical interferences

  • Model and detail spatial routing for onboard mechanical systems, including fuel lines, hydraulics, steering gear, and propulsion machinery

  • Perform spatial interference and clashing checks in the CAD environment before releasing drawings to the shop floor

  • Extract and manage precise Bills of Materials (BOMs), structural extrusion lists, and outsourced component orders

  • Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles, standardising fold lines, flanges, and tab-and-slot features for efficient manual build

  • Ensure all structural and system details comply with regulatory standards (e.g. MCA regulations, Lloyd's Register rules)

Experiences required

  • Proven experience in mechanical design or production engineering using SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM/EPDM or similar (Solid Edge, Inventor, Fusion 360, Onshape, PTC Windchill, Autodesk Vault, Siemens Teamcenter)

  • Strong background in aluminium fabrication, structural weldments, sheet metal, and machined components

  • Practical experience or familiarity with marine structures, vessels, GRP materials, or heavy mechanical assemblies (e.g. yellow goods, JCB, or automotive background)

  • Qualified via apprenticeship, HNC/HND, BSc, or Master’s level in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Design, or Yacht Production

  • A practical, hands-on background (e.g., former apprenticeship or workshop experience) is a strong advantage
